VIProfile: David and Sherry Lynn

David and Sherry Lynn, owners of Murfreesboro Flower Shop, are known for ensuring their customers have everything they need, and that their products are of the highest quality.

Tucked into an unassuming building on Memorial Boulevard, upon entering Murfreesboro Flower Shop the fragrance of multiple types of flowers fight for dominance. Roses, camellias, lilies, alstroemeria and massive buckets of greenery welcome any visitor to the shop. Their flowers come from all over the world – The United States, The Philippines, South Africa, Vietnam and South America to name a few of the countries. Decorative vases are scattered around the shop on display stands, which fight for floor space with the bountiful collection of flowers. And they carry live, indoor decorative plants from Literary Roots.

“They do it all,” said loyal customer Beth Ussery. “They did my son’s wedding this last year. They are doing my daughter’s wedding next September. I can just text them when I’m in a panic and they are there to the rescue.”

“We’ll do anything a customer wants,” said David. “We’ve always been that way. That’s probably what’s gotten us where we are at, the customer service that we give.”

They have created some unique arrangements for their clients including Dolly Parton, Apple Music and In Cahoots Studio, just to name a few. They were also responsible for the exotic florals at this year’s Wine Around the Square. Sherry does compact arrangements, building everything from a life-sized guitar to a miniature tractor to a turkey for a Thanksgiving centerpiece. One of the most unusual pieces she has built is a pig as part of the topper for a casket for the funeral of a woman who collected more than 2,000 pig figurines.

“If a client asks us to deliver an apple pie with their flowers,” noted David, “we’ll go to the store and get an apple pie to deliver with the flowers.”

Dedication to their customers has gained Murfreesboro Flower Shop a position in the top 100 flower shops in the world by Florists’ Transworld Delivery Association (FTD). David is a Master Florist, in spite of being color blind. He considers Henry Phillips, of Henry’s Florist on the Square, as a big influence on his craft. And he believes in surrounding himself with the best staff around, “every one of them.”

Growing the Business

The Lynns purchased Murfreesboro Flower Shop from C. B. Huddleston and Adrian Billingsley in 1980, six months after it opened. They had another flower shop in Manchester and wanted to expand “a little.”

“At that time, we were doing 13 to 15 orders a day and we were covered up,” David said with a chuckle. “Now, we do about 300 orders a day.”

Selling the Manchester store after their Murfreesboro business took off, they have slowly added other businesses to the mix. In 1998, they added Adventure Limousine service. And in 2014, they took on the Copper Ridge Event Venue located at 3597 Betty Ford Road in Murfreesboro.

“Dr. Jerry Compton asked me one Christmas Day if I wanted to go into the limousine business,” added David. “I told him, ‘Sure.’ We went into it together, but now it is just me after Jerry’s retirement.”

They don’t advertise the limousine service; however, they get about 12 to 15 runs per month, more during prom and wedding season. Holiday light tours in one of their limousines or SUVs are popular during the Christmas season. They will take clients anywhere they want to go. Their services include trips for VIP clientele, outings to the CMA Awards and seasonal tours to the Dancing Lights of Christmas at the Lebanon fairgrounds in Wilson County.

Copper Ridge Event Venue is located on what was built as a 17-acre horse farm. It features a massive natural cedar barn facility that can be dressed up for a formal wedding or down for an informal event. As one reviewer said on Facebook, “I have been to several events there, and each time was a marvelous experience.”

Giving to the Community

Many of the events at Copper Ridge are fundraisers, which the Lynns often donate the space to, like Charity Circle’s annual Cocktails at Copper Ridge. They also donate their limousines to activities in Rutherford and surrounding counties to events like Your Night to Shine, the Special Needs Prom. And for many years they have been supporting key community events by donating the floral arrangements. These events include the Duck Ball, Rutherford Society Gala, Paws and Pearls and to both Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City School systems. At Christmas time, they donate 10 bicycles to kids and gift baskets to needy families through the Sheriff’s Department. In a year, they generously give about $300,000 to the community in goods and services.

Looking at Sherry for help for names of the organizations they donate to, David exclaimed, “The list of what we do for the community goes on and on. I can’t even tell you what all we do, but Joyce Taylor could! We do it because this community is very good to us. We wouldn’t be anywhere without it.”

Their community partners are equally enamored of the Lynn’s devotion to the non-profits that are making a difference in the quality of life in Murfreesboro and beyond.

“For years, David and Sherry Lynn of Murfreesboro Flower Shop have shared their incredible talent and generosity with our community,” said Gina DeJean, Director of Rutherford Foundation at Saint Thomas Health. “Their stunning floral designs have graced our Rutherford Society Gala and Wine Around the Square events, adding beauty, elegance and a personal touch that guests never forget. Their commitment to giving back extends far beyond a single event—David and Sherry have brightened celebrations, honored milestones and brought joy to countless families across Rutherford County. We are deeply grateful for their artistry, their partnership and their unwavering heart for this community.”

Sherry and David just feel blessed that the community has been so good to them that they are able to give so much back.
