Henry, a nine-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi owned by Vicki and Nick Lewis, is funny, fun, smart and just so good natured. He loves people, but he’s not too friendly to other dogs.
“We’ve taken him to dog parks, and he ignores the other dogs, but he will seek out and follow the dog’s owners,” said Vicki. “I’m sure he’d go home with pretty much anyone.”
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are the breed famously preferred by Queen Elizabeth II. During her reign, she owned more than 30 of them, leaving two behind at her death. With her passing, the breed has fallen out of favor in the United Kingdom, but they remain popular in the United States. And the Netflix show “The Crown” has increased interest in the them.
The name “Corgi” means dwarf dog from the Welsh words “cor” and “ci.” Smart and very loyal to their owners, Welsh myth says that the breed was a gift to humans from fairies. There are two forms of Welsh Corgi, the Pembroke and the Cardigan.
Vicki and Nick Lewis picked Henry out of a litter from a local breeder.
“I love that he’s so happy,” added Vicki.
Having his own opinions about many things, he’s not afraid to let his family know what they are.
“He keeps us laughing,” said Vicki.
When he wants something, Henry likes to poke Vicki with his nose, or he will do a muffled bark. If he doesn’t get the response he’s looking for, he’ll bark louder and louder.
“He used to antagonize the cat,” explained Vicki, “who in turn would smack him with a paw. Henry took the whacks as a major insult. He would run the cat off or even run over him.”
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are a cattle herding breed that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, United Kingdom. They are excellent working dogs due to their agility and short legs. And Henry is true to his breed. He loves treats, and when he wants one, he will attempt to herd Vicki towards the snack jar. Then Henry will happily “sit” for the treat.
Henry brings joy to Vicki and Nick each and every day.
