Great Day to Honor Veterans at the VA Fall Festival

The Stones River Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution recently once again participated in the annual Alvin C. York VA Medical Center Fall Festival. The “quad” (a large field in the middle of the campus) was filled with hundreds of booths of people wanting to honor and show appreciation to the men and women who have defended our freedoms and liberties. For the veterans it was an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and have a good time.

Stones River members created a patriotic atmosphere with a booth complete with National, SAR and Service flags.  Each veteran and, in some cases, along with their caregiver came to the Stones River booth and engaged in good conversation while playing a special challenge game to win prizes.  Game winners walked away with a pair of socks or an apple and were cheered by Stones River members with a loud cheer of “HUZZAH”.  The mission objection was to give each veteran a word of thanks for their service and sacrifice.

While the festival brought encouragement to the veterans, it also gave the organizations participating an opportunity to develop a sense of unity and common purpose.   All were especially proud to serve with the 93 cadets of the Stewarts Creek High School JROTC.  Many of these cadets are preparing to serve in our Armed Forces one day.

In the end, the members of Stones River Chapter shared in the joy that they were able to give veterans a break from their mundane hospital routine.   They were able to bring a smile and a laugh to the faces of a LOT of special men and women who have earned the heartfelt appreciation of their country. Over 100 veterans were served. Mission accomplished.
