SIMMONS BUILDERS

With a Civil Engineering Master’s degree in his back pocket and nearly 10 years experience in the engineering and construction sales industry, Tommy Simmons knew he wanted to do something different. So in 2004, with wife Tara and 2 small children at home, Tommy left a comfortable job and starting building homes in Rutherford County. That leap of faith 15 years ago has led to Simmons Builders being a well known name as a homebuilder in the Murfreesboro area.

Today, husband and wife duo Tommy and Tara Simmons work together to operate Simmons Builders, a family business dedicated to building beautiful and well-built homesto stand the test of time. Having bought two homes under construction before they started building themselves, and now having built 3 homes for their own family, Tommy and Tara know that building a home can be a stressful time in a young couple’s life. That personal experience drives them to make the home building process easier and less stressful for their clients. “We want people to enjoy the building experience rather than it being a terrible 6 months for them and their family.”

Tommy takes care of the construction and the business activities for the company while Tara uses her Marketing degree and designer eye to make it all look pretty. Tommy says that while many know him as the face of the business, he understands that Tara is the one who brings everything together. “She’s the one who makes us run smoothly and keeps us on track. When I get too aggressive, she’s the voice of reason to pull back, but then when she sees an opportunity that I don’t, she’ll be the first to say let’s make a move on that property or let’s do something different”. It’s a pairing that has worked well both in business and family.

Tommy and Tara live on 29 acres in the picturesque community of Milton. Tara grew up in Conway, Arkansas while Tommy comes from a dairy and tobacco farm in small town Kentucky, making them a classic city-girl-country-boy couple. “We built a house in Northwoods, but then decided we wanted to live in the country so we built the same house in Milton”. The couple has 2 children, Spencer is a freshman at Tennessee Tech University and Morgan a freshman at Providence Christian Academy. Growing up, the kids didn’t have a choice but to be immersed in the building business. Right now, Tommy and Tara are enjoying the time together and the benefits of being business owners. “We are so blessed, and so thankful. We really enjoy what we do, and especially that we get to do it together.”
