Rutherford Co. CVB and TSSAA Named 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism

Among the winners of the Sports Destination Management Champions of Economic Impact,  you will find the 2018 TSSAA SPRING FLING, produced by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) in cooperation with Rutherford County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). An impressive economic impact of $3.5 million was estimated for 2018. TSSAA, holds the championship events in five sports (baseball, softball, girls’ soccer, track & field and tennis) during the same week in late May each year.

Events are held at venues across Rutherford County, including the outstanding facilities at Middle Tennessee State University. This Olympic-style event takes over 1,000 volunteers each year and approximately 30,000 spectators attend the event throughout the week. Visitors, event staff and athletes contribute to the 3,000 room nights that the Spring Fling event requires.

Organizers note the event has brought the community together and lead to increased awareness of Rutherford County being known as the Sports Capital of Tennessee and a legitimate sports destination. All winners of awards have been recognized in a special feature published in the November/December 2018 issue of Sports Destination Management. The entire article with full details on the winners listed below can also be found online along with a special feature on economic impact.
