Fred Shambaugh

There’s more to football than winning and losing — that’s a lesson Fred Shambaugh learned early on from mentors including Tom Osborne Nebraska and Tony Dungy. Having said that, winning is great … and in Rutherford County, there’s a lot of winning!

Shambaugh, originally from California, most recently coached at Centennial of Corona, a top 10 national program, before landing at MTCS in Rutherford County, where Shambaugh describes as having incredible talent among football players throughout the county.

Shambaugh says his coaching is unique for its “spread tempo.” Another unique tradition he’s carried on with his team over the years is pregame prayer, where the dads of players on his team are invited to join in for prayer before the start of each game.

In his long and successful career in coaching, Shambaugh has seen several changes over the years, but there’s one that stands out the most.

“With the feminization of boys in our culture, football is one of the only outlets that remains for boys to be completely challenged to go from boy to man,” he said.
