Days of Washing, Churning and Learning

Story and photography by Eric Lusk

For years now, teachers and students alike always look forward to Oaklands Mansion’s Days of Washing, Churning and Learning. This fun-filled field trip focuses on chores of the mid-1800’s through hands-on activities such as clothes washing, butter churning, quill writing, and rug beating. Artisans, dressed in authentically replicated attire were on the grounds to share their talents. Other activities included a scavenger hunt of the exterior of the house, kneading dough and limited house tours. The kids also enjoyed crafts and games like sack races, hoops-n-sticks, graces and 1860’s dress up.
