When a friend of Jim and Angel Davenport’s rescued Waylon from the streets, they adopted him from her. He is a five-year-old miniature greyhound and collie mix.
More than three million stray dogs are placed into shelters every year, and there are many more that are found on the street and saved much as the Davenport’s did with Waylon. Despite past traumas, street dogs often adapt well to home life, with 97% of owners satisfied with their adopted street dog according to research.
Pet dogs provide mental and physical health benefits – including unconditional companionship, reduced stress and increased physical activity through daily walks. Dogs boost social interaction, enhance safety, improve heart health and provide a sense of purpose, making them loyal, loving additions to any home. These things are the very reasons the Davenports love Waylon – he is a great companion, he loves to snuggle with them and the couple loves to take him on walks as much as he loves walking with them.
The Davenports admit that their dog is spoiled.
Waylon also makes them laugh. “When he goes to Pa and Granny’s, he knows they keep vanilla wafers in the pantry, so as soon as he enters their home, he runs straight to the pantry for his vanilla wafer ‘treats,’” noted Angel.
Another one of his funny tricks happens when they change sheets on the bed, Waylon runs and jumps on bed and loves to play tug-a-war with the clean sheets.
He is very smart. When he wants to go outside, Waylon hits the shutters on the Davenport’s windows with his nose. If he wants his healthy carrot treats, he sits in front of the refrigerator.
Going for a ride is another thing that Waylon enjoys, especially rides in the truck to Starbucks for a “Pup Cup” or to FirstBank for treats. He will “sit” for a treat.
Glad they took Waylon into their lives; the Davenports couldn’t picture life without him.
