Hanna and Spencer Carpenter had wanted a corgi for a long time. They found someone in Florida who lived close to their vacation home who had one available. The couple picked Oscar up in March 2022, and he’s been living his best life on their farm ever since. Corgis are excellent farm dogs, as they were originally bred for cattle herding. 

Oscar, now four, is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. This breed is part of the cultural heritage of Wales, according to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America’s website. Their history can be traced back to the 10th century, with their direct ancestor possibly coming to Wales with the Vikings. 

A full-blooded Pembroke Welsh Corgi has fur that can be red, sable, fawn, black or tan. Sometimes they have white markings, other times they do not. 

This dog has a hilarious personality. Oscar loves to play with the Carpenter’s son’s toy cars. He chases after them more than their son does. And he likes to chase balls too.

While this breed is usually always ready to play and interact with their family, Oscar sometimes acts more like a cat. He is very content sleeping all day in Spencer’s office.

He’s not spoiled at all. Not! Oscar has a bed in every room of the house, and he also has his own designated spot on the couch. Plus, he has his nightly treats, which include a dental stick and a frozen carrot. 

Very intentionally, if Oscar wants something, he’ll walk over to whatever it is and nose it until his humans look at him and get it for him. 

“I wouldn’t say this is a trick,” said Hanna, “but if one of us is upset, he immediately gives us his full attention until we feel better. He snuggles just enough, but chasing a ball is his life.”

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are known to be sensitive and intelligent dogs, as well as very loyal. It is no surprise that Oscar would pick up on the emotions of those in his family when they are distressed or ill. 

When fed a proper diet, provided with an active life and given regular check-ups with appropriate vaccinations, Pembroke Welsh Corgi can live a longer life than the average dog.

“Oscar is the best farm dog we could ask for,” said Hanna.
