10 Experiential Birthday Parties with “Cool Factor”

Today’s birthday parties are about more than cake and presents, they are all about experiences. The more “hands on” the better. Read on to experience ten places in Rutherford County offering unique experiences that are sure to make your child’s birthday party the talk of the town.

Wilderness Station

The Wilderness Station, which is located on the grounds of Barfield Park, is an outdoor education and recreation center with a retreat room that is available to rent for birthday parties.

Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation staff provides two possible party programs from which you will need to choose one.

Animal Adventures (ages three and up) which provides partiers with the chance to learn all about local wild animals, take a hike to look for one local animal in their natural environment (weather permitting), do a related craft, and then meet the Station’s resident “animal ambassador.” If the weather is not human-friendly, then participants will do a fun activity inside. Choose what animal you think will appeal to your group from turtles, snakes, insects, frogs or salamanders.

Owls Love the Night (ages five and up) will allow day or night enjoyment of this party by your child’s friends. Kids will learn about the many animals that come out and play when the sun sets. The retreat room becomes a star-filled night where the children encounter fireflies, lunar moths, frogs, owls, and more. The party includes a take home craft and a hike to look for animals that may be sleeping.

The Ascent

A hot new party option is rock climbing. The Ascent offers a rock climbing wall and other activities for birthday partygoers requesting adventure. A “Party Captain” takes the lead and guides everyone through the experience, acting as safety expert, trainer, and cheerleader. He or she will get the group “geared up” and ready to enjoy the activity.

Young climbers are introduced to the tread wall, transverse cave, and auto belays. Those 14 years old and above have the option to learn full belay. For those younger than ten, party size must be less than 15 members.

After everyone gets the hang of the process, the Party Captain will teach everyone climbing games, or help them find the different routes up the wall.

One happy parent said on their website that it was“…the easiest, most fun, and least stressful birthday party we ever pulled off… It was a blast!”

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring

We all know that the Discovery Center is a great place for kids to have fun and learn about how the world works through hands on activities, but it is also a great place to have your child celebrate his or her birthday.

The Center offers a number of birthday party options. The king of these party options is to rent the entire building for an after 5:00 p.m. Signature Party. The Signature Party can have one of six themes suggested on their, or you can design your own. Either way, one of their educators will make sure that all participants have a blast!

Party themes include Animal Safari; Birthday Blast-Off; Dino-mite Party; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; Princess and Pirates; and Tea Party.

Each of these parties includes time in the center and a themed activity. The Safari Party offers interaction with resident animals, like petting a snake (eek!). At the Blast-Off Party your child and their friends get to make alien slime and shoot off rockets. And the kids get to go looking for buried treasure at the Pirate at the Pirate and Princess Party.

Two other on-site party options are the Adventure Party and the Discovery Party. Both of these options take place during the Center’s regular hours of operation. They take place in the Adventure Room and include time to explore all the activities in the building, as well as one of the themed activities.

The coolest option is to have Discovery Center come to your house. Their 50 ft. mobile lab, called the STEAM Bus, will come to your party. The bus is full of all kinds of fun things to do and learn about. Center staff can even customize the experience just for your child. This experience will include hand-on activities and exciting demonstrations.
