VIProfile: Jordan & Justin Howell When Work IS Family

Brothers Jordan and Justin Howell are giving family-owned business a modern edge with traditional values

At first glance, the offices of family-owned Quality Exteriors evoke a feeling of the Old South, personified by beautiful stables and barns set in an idyllic little valley just outside the hustle and bustle of Murfreesboro.  Walk into the Howell’s modest domain of business, however, and you’ll quickly find that the brothers are operating a fast-paced, modern business that combines the latest in cutting-edge technology with traditional values and customer-service philosophies.

“It’s pretty simple, really,” says Jordan.  “We treat our customers the way we would treat our family.  They’re trusting us to take care of their roof, or windows, or to repair their home.  We take that seriously.”

As the Ruthies winner for Favorite Roofer seven years in a row, Justin realizes that maintaining a positive image for Quality Exteriors begins with the smallest detail – like a polo shirt.

“People seem surprised sometimes, but our polo-and-khaki philosophy is really important.  We’re not showing up to work on your house in a t-shirt with yesterday’s paint on it.  We operate Quality Exteriors knowing that the smallest detail can make a big difference.”

That difference is evident in the growth that Quality Exteriors has enjoyed during the past 10 years.  Not only does the team take care of residential roofing as they always have – they’ve also expanded their services to include commercial projects like schools, churches, business developments and high-rise buildings in Nashville.

“It’s pretty cool knowing that we’re adding to the skyline in Nashville.  Our construction partners know we’re going to do our job right the first time.  We love being a part of that growth,” Jordan says.

While Quality Exteriors projects can be seen all over the state, from Knoxville to Jackson to Chattanooga, the brothers are adamant that their main focus has been, and will continue to be, Middle Tennessee.

“This is where we live…where we’re raising our families. We’re invested in this community and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” says Justin. Both brothers are active in the Murfreesboro community, with philanthropic roles at the Boys and Girls Club of Rutherford County, The Jones College of Business at MTSU and Murfreesboro Young Professionals. Quality Exteriors also commits to roofing several Habitat for Humanity houses every year.

"As my kids grow, I want them to see the impact we’ve made,” Justin explains. “I want Daisye and Jack to know that yeah, Daddy and Uncle Jordan build roofs, but we do a lot more, too.”

Jordan agrees. “One of the best parts of having this business is working with my family.  Not everyone gets to do what we do.  It’s nothing for Justin and I to walk around the barn, talking about projects, troubleshooting or setting goals. We’re really lucky to have that.”

During their downtime, you’ll find the guys taking in MTSU football or basketball games with their families, cruising on the lake or tending to their Tennessee Walking Horses. The boys’ mom, Janet Howell, is an award-winning equestrian, and she also happens to be the operations manager at Quality Exteriors.

“Well, we know if we mess something up, we’re not going to get away with it for long,” laughs Justin.

“That’s the beauty of family,” adds Jordan, with a smile.
