2016 Summer Camp Listing: Nature & History

What an amazing array of activities our Rutherford County community offers to our children with enrichment camps of all kinds! Summer doesn’t have to be a time to regress, but instead can be a time to inspire, unplug and recharge, and illuminate the possibilities for their futures. The following camps are offered within Rutherford County for all ages and interests. But do plan ahead, many registrations start soon and classes will fill up. Take advantage of these amazing opportunities!

ADVENTURE CAMPS I AND II
High Adventure awaits you this week.  Learn new outdoor skills that will test your courage, make your heart race, get you laughing, and help you to appreciate what the great outdoors has to offer.  Climbing, kayaking, ropes courses, zip lines, hiking, and more.
ADVENTURE CAMP I Ages: 10 –12, June 6–10, 9am–4pm, $100+$50 equipment fee.
ADVENTURE CAMP II Ages:12–14, July 11–15, 9am–4pm, $100+$50 equipment fee.

EXPLORERS CAMP AT WILDERNESS STATION
Take this week to really EXPLORE the outdoors. We will combine adventure and wildlife activities that are sure to bring out the explorer in every kid.  Enjoy kayaking, bouldering, hiking, Campout Day and more. Learn about all the animals that call Tennessee home while enjoying new friends as you share laughs and make memories during this fun-filled week.  Then, try to talk your parents into staying the night with you Friday for the (optional) Family Campout to share all the skills and knowledge you learned this week. Ages: 8 – 9, June 13 – 17, 9am - 2pm. $75.00 + $25.00 equipment fee (additional fee for Family Campout).

HERITAGE CAMP AT CANNONSBURGH VILLAGE
Campers will put themselves in the place of the early settlers of Tennessee, experiencing some of their daily life events such as crafts, chores, and hearthstone cooking. Ages: 8-14. July 25 – 29, 9am - Noon. $50 + $10 Activity Fee. Registration is required.

JANE DAVIS ACADEMY SUMMER CAMP AT SAM DAVIS HOME
Campers will be instructed in the fine arts of 19th Century womanhood such as dress, sewing, dance, and more. Period dress is optional. $125 or $100 for members. Ages 7-14. July 11-15, 9am–3pm.

NATURE CAMP
Catch a crawdad.  Hike a trail.  Watch a heron.  Wander along the river bank.  Touch a snake.  Examine an insect.  Investigate an animal track.  Explore the woods.  Plant a native flower.  Make a new friend.  Play a new game.  Create a camp craft.  Experience nature. Ages: 6 –7, June 20 – 24, $40.00 + $10 program fee.

OAKLANDS ANTEBELLUM ACADEMY
Girls ages 11 and up return to the days of Rhett and Scarlett. Surrounded by the 1860s furnishings of the Oaklands Mansion, students are introduced to crafts and history, while being instructed in nineteenth century manners, museum etiquette, and skills expected of young ladies of the period. $125. June 20-24. 9am–2pm.

SCHOOL OF THE SOLDIER SUMMER CAMP AT SAM DAVIS HOME
Your marching orders have arrived! Grab your haversack and canteen as you head off to join the ranks. Campers spend an active week complete with drills, crafts, campfire cooking, and spy games as they learn about the life of Civil War soldiers. Period dress is optional. $125 or $100 for members. Ages 7-14. June 6-10, 9am – 3pm.

SCIENCE OF HISTORY SUMMER CAMP AT SAM DAVIS HOME
Science of History focuses on the plantation’s natural resources and features engaging, hands-on activities designed to inspire campers to take a closer look at the world around them. Campers will learn how science and history work hand in hand and may even get up close and personal with some local wildlife! $125 or $100 for members. Ages 7-14. June 20-24, 9am–3pm.

TEENS: SUMMER KAYAK CLUB AT WILDERNESS STATION
Hey Teens! Every week we will embark on a new adventure along the Stones River.  Learn kayak paddle strokes, how to read the river, and water safety techniques while meeting new friends. Registration begins March 1st and the club is filled on a first-come basis.  Limited to 8 participants. Age: 13-18, Thursdays, May 26   – June 23, 2-5pm. Various Locations. $75.00 + $25.00 activity fee for 5 adventures (includes a T-shirt). Call the Wilderness Station to register.

UNDER THE OAKS CAMP PRESENTED BY OAKLANDS MANSION
Children ages 6 to 12 will play under the old Oak trees at Oaklands Mansion. Children enjoy games from the past as they spend time outside unplugged playing in the fields and walking the nature trails. They will also enjoy travelling back through time to experience life as a visitor in the nineteenth century. $35. June 16-17. 10am- Noon.

WILD & WONDERFUL WORLD – DISCOVERY CENTER
Let the great outdoors inspire wonder and adventure in your child! Campers will explore the natural world as we hike and wade through the wetlands and Murfree Spring, learn about Tennessee’s native plants and animals, and develop a nature survival skill each day. June 27-July 1. 9am – 4pm. Member $175. Non member $200. Rising K-5th grade.

WILDLIFE CAMP AT WILDERNESS STATION
Love animals?  Love the outdoors?  Wildlife Camp is calling your name.  Strengthen your appreciation of Tennessee’s wildlife and outdoor sports by spending the week with us.  Enjoy fishing, kayaking, reptile research, hiking, skeet shooting, birds of prey program, outdoor cooking, and archery.  Experience the outdoors in a new way this summer.
